Nicole Richie happy with her jail time

Nicole Richie was quite pleased with how her 82 minute jail sentence went, according to a statement released by her attorney. "Nicole was aware that most people with sentences similar to hers are booked and released in a matter of hours and she was hoping to be treated like everyone else. Nevertheless, she was prepared to serve her entire four-day sentence had the Sheriff´s Department required her to do so. Of course, she was pleasantly surprised to be released so quickly."
Well of course she was, but what I want to know is why the Los Angeles court system even bothers giving out jail sentences if the criminals just get to go home practically the minute they arrive in jail. What is even the point of wasting 82 minutes of law enforcement time on Nicole Richie when there are truly unsavory characters out there doing hard crimes?
I would have thought that the purposes of jail sentences were to uh, make people go to jail, but instead they are obviously there to skew statistics, and probably extort more funding or something dodgy like that. A scandal within a scandal!
